The Leader and The Southern Argus took out the major awards at this year’s Country Press SA Annual Awards Dinner held at McCracken Country Club, Victor Harbor last Friday night.

Both newspapers are owned by Leader Newspapers Pty. Ltd., at Angaston.

The Leader won for Best Newspaper 2022 Over 4,000 Circulation and for Best Advertising Feature with an eight page promotion marking the 25th Anniversary of Whistler Wines.

Tony Robinson, Editor of The Leader for 35 years, received a special plaque to mark his 50 year’s service with The Leader.

Judge, Mr Bob Yeates for Best Newspaper Over 4,000 Circulation, said, “Research reflects the local newspaper is the most reliable and trustworthy news service in Australia.”

In scoring The Leader first place, Mr Yeates said, “Editorial and picture scores were very close between nearly all newspapers, but The Leader pictures were consistently very bright and their advertising was well designed and well placed through the newspaper.

“The Leader, like all entrants, touched many community groups with their collation of community news reporting.

“Also the printing of their newspapers produced a consistent result issue to issue with no mechanical marking or uneven ink coverage.”

The Southern Argus won for Best Newspaper under 4,000 Circulation and journalist, Giorgina McKay was winner of the Young Journalist of The Year 2022.

Judge, Mr Leigh Radford OAM, said he was impressed with Giorgina’s depth and strength of her articles together with her evocative photography.

He added, saying, “Giorgina demonstrates a standard of work which makes her a very worthy winner of Journalist of the Year 2022.”

She was nominated by Sara Gilligan, Editor of The Southern Argus.

Sara Gilligan also won third place for Best Editorial Writing and third place for Best Headline.

Giorgina McKay achieved second place for Best Road Safety Reporting.

Commenting on the award winning success of both newspapers, Tony Robinson, Managing Director of Leader Newspapers Pty. Ltd. said this is the first time in the 104 year history that The Leader had won the Best Newspaper Over 4,000 Circulation and it was the first time The Southern Argus had won the Best Newspaper Under 4,000 Circulation in the newspaper’s 157 year history.

In achieving the Country Press SA Award success, The Leader wishes to both acknowledge and thank all our loyal advertisers, contributors, readers and staff who support our community based newspaper each and every week.

Without this ongoing commitment, for which we are extremely grateful for, it would not have been possible for The Leader to have won any of these awards.
