The Algal Bloom may not yet be over but there is some much-needed good news, with the benefits from the Federal and State Governments’ Summer Plan Dining Cashback program starting to flow through.

SA King Prawns at Edinburgh North, run by Tony and Heather Simounds, is one of many seafood retailers benefitting from the cashback incentive, with Tony saying the business has already seen the positive impact.

“We have just gone out leaps and bounds,” said Tony. “We’re miles ahead of last year so it’s certainly working.

“It’s a good thing the Government gives a hand.”

Following a good prawning season, a lot of the shop’s stock was put into cold storage in June.

Despite much of the catch coming from areas not impacted by the algal bloom, Tony said he and Heather were initially worried about sales.

But since the program was announced Tony said business has been strong, and SA King Prawns has extended its hours to open every day, as customers take the opportunity to purchase.

“It’s just gone wild, everyone’s been coming in and buying their $150 worth and more,” Tony said.

The offer gives South Australians 50 per cent cashback, up to the value of $50 at participating businesses, and for those few customers who are unaware of the program, Tony is more than happy to let them know all about it.

SA King Prawns will be making its annual trip out to the Barossa on December 20, with the truck to be parked at Kroemer’s Crossing at Tanunda between 8.00am and 12.00pm.

It will be the perfect opportunity to stock up before Christmas with both cooked and raw prawns available, as well as three-kilogram cartons.

The dining period for the second draw of the Summer Plan Dining Cashback will continue until January 1 2026, with a third, fourth and fifth draw to be held at the beginning of each month until March 2026.

South Australians aged 18 and over can enter the ballot by 1 January 2026 for a chance to win a Dining Cashback in the next draw on 2 January 2026.
