Lamb ‘orphanage’ a family affair

1 min read

Members of farming family, the Jaegars, from Buchanan, east of Eudunda, have set up an inventive new system in an old shed on the property for taking care of lambs.

Featured in The Leader's Farmer in Focus last month, we thought it was fitting to further highlight a local innovation which has helped streamline farming processes.

Tanya Jaegar explained that her husband has dubbed the project the "Lamb Orphanage," a name which she said has stuck.

She explained that the lambs can become separated from the ewes for all manner of reasons, and that these lambs are then housed in a converted old shed on their property.

While it once may have been quite a task to take care of so many lambs, the Jaegars have certainly taken strides to ensure that no lamb is left behind.

Much of the work converting the shed was completed by Tanya's brother-in-law, Roger, who set to work renovating to make the space more suitable for lamb-rearing.

One of the most impressive additions came in the form of a DeLaval lamb feeder.

Purchased last year, Tanya explained that the automatic feeder allows the lambs to feed from it whenever they want to.

With such comfortable conditions, Tanya said the lambs are definitely kept contented in their new home.

"The lambs grow exceptionally well and are very happy with the feeder. It is always very quiet in the shed when lambs are on the DeLaval feeder. Bottle fed lambs are always calling out," Tanya said.
