The Leader welcomes new cadet journalist
Thursday was my first day as a Cadet Journalist at The Leader, making a mighty, yet short, first week. Thus far I have been briefly introduced to photography, the writing style of a journalist, and have taken a trip to Barossa Bushgardens to assist in capturing this school holiday’s muddy fun.
About me
I graduated last year from Nuriootpa High School and love playing netball locally for Nuriootpa Netball Club. I moved here with my parents and younger brother back in 2021 from Mount Isa, Queensland, to be closer to family.
Growing up in a remote mining town was vastly different from the Barossa but has exposed me to so many great opportunities and I’ve made so many meaningful connections.
I have been very lucky to have been selected for such a unique and rare opportunity and in future look forward to completing my three years of training and working as a Grade 1 journalist.
I’ve felt inspired to become a journalist on and off for a few years, unsure of my future plan like any other fresh high school graduate, but have continued a passion for writing.
Connecting with locals to explore and uncover leads through interviews and photography interests me because it means every work day is different and interactive.
It’s hard to say after two days but I believe that my fast learning and adequate writing skills align the most with the role.
I also have a friendly personality which will allow me to connect with clients and build contacts within the community.
However, a future challenge will likely be building the confidence needed to successfully interview and photograph clients on my own.
Initially, the role of Cadet Journalist has started as expected, learning as experiences are available and making further baby steps to an exciting career in journalism.
