Stockport local Kelechi Ekwomadu is now a National Champion, after competing at the recent Australian Athletics national championships.
Kelechi won the U/18 100m race running it in 10.4 seconds, and came in second in the U/18 200m.
He also now holds the state record for the 200m with a time of 21.22 after breaking the previous best in his semi-final.
A humble Kelechi told The Leader he was assisted by a good wind but felt he ran well.
"Very happy with the outcome," said Kelechi.
"[I had] a little bit of nerves coming in but we're happy to get it done.
"It was good to be able to get [the record]."
Kelechi has previously competed at the Australian Championships in 2024 and at All Schools Championships in 2024 and 2023 but his previous results had been 'a bit all over the place'.
He said it was good to come back this year and get in the top three for both distances.
Kelechi has been involved in athletics since a young age, with a brief stint training for soccer before returning to athletics to focus on running.
Moving out to Stockport when he was 14 presented some challenges - including needing to travel further for synthetic tracks to train on, but he said he feels he has found a great community at his school Trinity College, and has plenty of other younger athletes to keep him inspired.
"Everyone's doing really well and it pushes you to improve in your sport."
Kelechi said he would like to see how far his running can take him and hopes to one day to reach the highest level at the Olympics.
"To represent Australia in Australia would be quite an honour so I really want to work towards that," he said.
Coach Russel Hansen has been coaching Kelechi since his move to Stockport and was full of praise for his record breaking run.
"I thought, wow, that's the best 50 metres I've seen," he said.
Russel said that although athletics has been a 'niche' sport he expects to see a massive rise in interest coming up to the Brisbane Olympics games.
"It's exciting for these young people coming through," he said.
Kelechi has some words of advice for any other kids who are thinking of getting into athletics.
"Just start off and just enjoy the process," he said.
"Enjoy spending time with your mates or learning how to run better because that's how it started for me, I just enjoyed what I was doing.
"It's not going to be an easy ride...but it's worth it."
